Ghost Controls Access Control Installation: The Riverside Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Ghost Controls access control hardware in Riverside, with most installed jobs running between $380 and $740 depending on which module you need and whether we’re replacing an existing keypad or adding a new receiver to an older arm system. In most cases we can have a technician out the same day you call, because we keep Ghost Controls keypads, receivers, and vehicle sensors on the truck. The way most Riverside homeowners discover a failed access control part is simple: the gate worked fine yesterday, the remote still opens it, but the keypad outside the driveway has gone dark or stopped accepting the code.

That’s the moment to pay attention. A dead keypad usually isn’t a dead motor. It’s the access control layer that failed, and replacing just that layer is far cheaper than replacing the opener.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls builds its access control line to work across their R-series and A-series swing arm openers: the AXS1, AXP1, RXX1, and RXP1, along with the older GPC series that’s still common on Riverside properties built in the mid-2010s. The keypad part number you’ll see most often is the AXS-KP1, which uses a four-digit to eight-digit PIN and pairs with the receiver board inside the opener housing. The vehicle sensor (AXS-VS1) is a magnetic probe that reads the steel mass of a car and tells the gate to open automatically, no remote or keypad needed.

One compatibility gotcha we see regularly: the newer AXS-series keypads will not pair with first-generation GPC opener boards without a secondary receiver module. If your opener was installed before roughly 2016, we check the board revision before we quote the work, because the fix may require a universal receiver rather than a straight keypad swap. Ghost Controls doesn’t label its boards clearly on the outside, so this takes about five minutes of inspection with the cover off. As for OEM versus aftermarket, we install both. The OEM keypad is weather-sealed to a higher standard and tends to hold up better in Riverside’s summer heat, but there are quality aftermarket receivers that work fine when the opener is protected by a canopy or mounted under shade.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Access Control Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Ghost Controls Access Control Installation Is Failing
  • Keypad is dark or unresponsive. In most cases this is dead internal batteries (the AXS-KP1 runs on three AAA cells) or corrosion on the battery contacts from months of condensation. We open it, clean the contacts, test voltage, and either reseal or replace it.
  • Code stopped working but the remote still opens the gate. The keypad’s transmitter and the paired receiver have lost their link, or the keypad’s memory got wiped by a low-battery event. This doesn’t require a new opener, but it usually requires reprogramming or a replacement keypad.
  • Gate opens for every car except yours. If you have a vehicle sensor, the probe may have shifted in the gravel or soil, or its detection range needs adjusting. On hillside driveways in Canyon Crest, we see sensor drift more often than outright failure because erosion slowly moves the probe housing.
  • Keypad works intermittently, mostly in the evening. Heat expansion during Riverside afternoons can separate a cracked solder joint inside the keypad’s circuit board. It works once it cools, then fails again the next hot day. This is a replace, not a repair.
  • The gate buzzes but won’t move after entering the code. The access control layer is working; the opener’s limit switch or motor capacitor is not. That’s a separate repair, and it’s why we always photograph what we find so you know which layer actually failed.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote in Riverside, in writing, before any tools come out:

  • Keypad replacement (installed): $220-$360 depending on OEM versus aftermarket and whether we need to pair with an older GPC board.
  • Keypad plus receiver module (for pre-2016 GPC openers): $380-$480 installed.
  • Vehicle sensor replacement (AXS-VS1): $280-$410 installed, including re-trenching the probe wire if needed.
  • Full access control layer replacement (keypad, receiver, sensor): $620-$740 installed.

Every quote includes the part, the labor, the programming, and the photo documentation we hand you when we leave. The price you approve is the price you pay. That’s Clause 1 of the Haven Standard: have it in writing. If a second opinion quoted you something different, bring us the paperwork and we’ll review it at no cost.

You can safely replace the keypad batteries yourself. Pop the cover, swap the three AAAs, and test the code. If that doesn’t restore function, stop there. The next steps involve opening the opener housing, identifying board revisions, matching transmitter and receiver frequencies, and in the case of vehicle sensors, working with buried low-voltage wiring. None of that is worth guessing at. A miswired receiver can leave the gate thinking it has an obstruction, and a gate that reverses unpredictably is dangerous to kids, pets, and cars.

If you’re in Riverside and the keypad won’t come back after new batteries, call us at (951) 934-7330. We’ll tell you what we think it is before we even dispatch, and we’ll confirm it in writing before we touch anything.
