BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Riverside Owner’s Guide

Most BFT keypad and intercom failures on Riverside gates come down to one of three things: a corroded ribbon cable, a dead keypad membrane, or a power supply that’s drifted out of spec. We stock the common BFT replacement parts on the truck, and a typical keypad swap runs $185 to $340 installed, while intercom module replacement usually lands between $260 and $480 depending on the model and whether the wiring at the gate post needs re-terminating. In most Riverside neighborhoods, we can have the part matched and installed the same day we diagnose it.

The way owners usually find us is specific: the keypad worked yesterday, today it takes three presses to register a digit, or the intercom rings but the audio sounds like it’s underwater. Sometimes the gate opens fine from the remote but the keypad won’t wake up at all. That’s almost always the keypad itself, not the control board, and it’s a faster fix than most people expect.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT built several keypad and intercom lines over the years, and they don’t all interchange. The MITTO series keypads (MITTO 2, MITTO 4, MITTO 2E) are the most common on Riverside swing gates from the early 2000s through about 2018. Then BFT shifted to the KLEIO series and the RIGEL 5 wired keypad. The intercom side splits between the older CLONIX wireless modules and the newer PHEBE and ULTRA wired intercom systems.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see regularly: a MITTO keypad from 2012 will not talk to a RIGEL 5 receiver, and a KLEIO keypad won’t pair with an older MITTO-era control board without a protocol adapter. If you’re not sure which series you have, pop the keypad cover and look for the model label on the back of the membrane. Take a photo of it and the control board before you order anything. We’ve had Riverside customers buy the wrong keypad off an online catalog because the housing looked identical, and the radio frequency inside was 433 MHz instead of the 868 MHz their system needed.

OEM BFT parts carry a two-year manufacturer warranty and cost more. Quality aftermarket equivalents for MITTO and KLEIO keypads run about 30 to 40 percent less and perform reliably in our climate, but we won’t install an aftermarket part unless we can verify it’s frequency-matched and weather-sealed to the same rating. For intercom modules, we recommend OEM. The audio board tolerances are tighter, and aftermarket intercom returns are where we’ve seen the most disappointment.

Signs Your BFT Keypad or Intercom Is Failing

Signs Your BFT Keypad or Intercom Is Failing
  • Double-press or no-press on the keypad buttons. This is the membrane wearing out. The conductive layer under the silicone buttons breaks down from heat and UV, and Riverside summers accelerate it. A keypad that needs three presses to register a “4” is not a programming issue; it’s a mechanical one.
  • Keypad backlight on, gate won’t move. The keypad is transmitting, but the receiver or the control board isn’t hearing it. This can be a frequency drift issue in older MITTO transmitters or a blown receiver module. We test the transmission with a signal meter before we condemn anything.
  • Intercom rings but no audio, or one-way audio. On CLONIX and PHEBE units, this is usually a failed capacitor on the audio board. It’s a known failure point after seven or eight years. The fix is board replacement, not a wiring repair.
  • Intermittent operation when it rains. Riverside may be dry most of the year, but the winter storms find every weak seal on a gate post keypad. Water intrusion into the housing corrodes the ribbon connector, and the symptoms come and go with the weather.
  • Keypad works, intercom doesn’t, or vice versa. If one half of the combined unit is dead and the other works, it’s almost always an internal component failure, not a power issue at the post. The two circuits share a power supply but use separate boards.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the pricing picture for Riverside, in writing:

  • MITTO 2 or MITTO 4 keypad replacement: $185 to $285 installed
  • KLEIO keypad replacement: $220 to $340 installed
  • RIGEL 5 wired keypad replacement: $240 to $360 installed
  • CLONIX intercom module repair or replacement: $260 to $410 installed
  • PHEBE or ULTRA intercom replacement: $340 to $480 installed
  • Diagnostic visit (applied toward the repair): $89, and we hand you the written findings before we quote anything

The range comes down to two things: which series you have, and whether the wiring at the gate post is still in usable condition. If the previous installer left wire nuts wrapped in electrical tape out in the Riverside sun, the re-termination adds time. If the wiring is clean, the swap is quick.

Every BFT keypad or intercom job includes our full documentation habit: a photo of the old part, a photo of the new part installed, the part number written on the invoice, and the price agreed in writing before we start. The labor carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. The part itself carries the manufacturer warranty, whether OEM or aftermarket. You’ll know which one you’re getting before we install anything.

Some things on a gate are safe to check yourself. This is low-voltage electronics, not a high-tension spring, so here’s the honest split.

You can safely check the breaker or the gate’s dedicated outlet, and you can visually inspect the keypad housing for cracks or water staining. You can also note whether the problem is constant or intermittent, because that detail saves diagnostic time when you describe it to us.

What you shouldn’t do is open the keypad housing and start probing. The BFT keypads have a ribbon connector that’s easy to tear, and once it’s damaged, the part is done regardless of what the original fault was. We’ve also seen homeowners pull the intercom module out, short a pin, and take the control board down with it. A $220 keypad job becomes a $600 board replacement real fast. If the keypad or intercom isn’t working, call (951) 934-7330 and let us put a meter on it before you touch anything.
